Need help. What is the difference between a direct object and a direct object pronoun and an indirect object? Please be thourgh. Are all direct objects mentioned above nouns? How can you find a direct object in a sentence? What is the difference between a direct object and a direct object pronoun and an indirect object?
A direct object receives the action of a verb. [The cow ate the grass. The boy drank his milk. The child bounced a ball.--the objects are grass, milk and ball, respectively.]
A pronoun can be used to replace the noun in each of these cases. [The cow ate it. The boy drank it. The child bounced it--it is used as a direct object in each sentence.]
An indirect object receives the action of the verb, but indirectly--you can usually reword the sentence by making it the object of the preposition to, or for. [Give me the ball--the direct object is ball--that's what you're giving--but me is the indirect object--you could reword it and say, Give the ball to me, in which case me would be the object of the preposition to.]
To find a direct object in a sentence, first find the verb and then say ';what?'; [The cow ate what? Grass. The boy ate what? Milk. Child bounced what? Ball.]
